Check Engine Light

Your First Line of Defense

A common misconception to diagnosing a check engine light is that a quick scan with a code reader will properly diagnose an issue. This is not always true. Oftentimes, determining the engine code might cause you to replace unnecessary parts on the vehicle.

When we diagnose a check engine light, we use a diagnostic computer to determine what area to start the diagnoses. An engine code set leads us to either ignition, fuel, emission, evaporative emissions, powertrain, body control, or something else on the vehicle.

We use computers to check specific data related to the issue. Then we follow a multi-step process of elimination to test components until we determine the actual cause of the check engine light.
